According to the MIT Press announcement, Carliss Y. Baldwin, Design Rules, Volume 2: How Technology Shapes Organizations, will be published in December this year. The first volume of this book was published in 2000, and a Japanese translation was also published in 2004 by Haruhiko Ando.
The first volume became the epicenter of the debate surrounding architecture. However, Professor Baldwin is not just discussing whether integral or modular is better. Baldwin is trying to build a general theory of the relationship between technology and organizations.Professor Baldwin began writing the second volume in 2016, and the drafts for chapters 1 to 25 are available on Research Gate, SSRN, and the HBS website. In our laboratory, we are reading through these drafts and trying to keep up with Professor Baldwin's new theoretical developments. One of our graduate students, who chose the theme of architecture and organization, is the main person in charge. Reading the 25 chapters at a rapid pace is quite tough, and there is a considerable risk that the finished product will be published before we have finished and we will be forced to compare it with the draft. However, if we can understand the book before other laboratories in Japan and the graduate student's thesis is completed, it will be worth the effort.

第1巻はアーキテクチャをめぐる議論の震源地となった。しかし，ボールドウィン教授は，インテグラルかモジュラーかというそれだけの議論をしているのではない。技術と組織の関係に関する一般理論を構築しようとしているのだ。
ボールドウィン教授は，第2巻を2016年から書き始められたそうで，第1章から第25章までのドラフトはResearch GateやSSRN，またHBSのサイトに掲載されている。当ゼミでは，アーキテクチャと組織をテーマとして選択した院生を中心にこれらのドラフトを何とかして読破し，ボールドウィン教授の新たな理論的展開を追跡しようとしている。25章を急ピッチで読むのはかなりきつく，また作業の途中で完成品が出版されてドラフトとの照合を余儀なくされる恐れがかなりあるが，その時はその時だ。国内のよそのゼミより早く本書を理解できて，院生の修論も完成するならば，労力を払う価値はあるだろう。
